The STATE model of behaviour

This model was created by med and Fredrik Praesto during our 5 year collaboration on the book Unpack Your Existence (Amazon), which is 34 hypnotic chapters and 86 techniques for self-help in understanding and changing behaviour.

The Behavioral Model (STATE)

The foundation of the model is that a behavior, whether conscious or unconscious, always has a reason. If we want to change a behavior, we must either eliminate the reason or replace it with a behavior that addresses the reason in a better way. A behavior is always driven by an emotion. The body is always involved.

Example:
Someone is often irritated in a certain situation. Irritation signifies that the person is uncomfortable but has no solution.

1. What is the behavior?
(Irritation, dependency, sadness)

2. Identify the contributing factors, as all parts play a role in shaping the behavior.

What is the context:

  • Situation? (work, family dinner, gym, riding bus, etc.)
  • Environment: (Outdoors, indoors, bright, dark, crowded, etc.)
  • Companions: (Friends, alone, police officer, parent?)
  • Time-related factors: (Morning, evening, autumn, Mondays, daily, etc.)

3. Then examine the experience and physiology:

  • Thoughts: What is the person telling themselves? What images come to mind?
  • Emotions: What emotion is the person experiencing?:
  • Physiology: How is their posture, tension, breathing, blushing, headache—any physical signals in the body?

Is there another situation where the emotion and behavior are completely different, perhaps even the opposite?  Map that situation in the same way to begin understanding the pattern.
